Academic System
Student management platform
Context
The Academic System of the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC) is a web application developed to support every aspect of the student experience.
It provides access to academic progress tracking, grades, course enrollment, teacher–student appointment scheduling, printable reports, and notifications, becoming the central hub for students and faculty.
The platform replaced the institution's legacy system and supports the entire semester selection process, allowing more than 5,000 students to register their classes within a two-day period while maintaining full system stability and responsiveness.
Approach
I served as the lead developer, responsible for both frontend and backend development, working alongside a web designer and a database administrator.
The project was built from the ground up to replace the existing academic system with a more modern, scalable, and maintainable solution. Beyond feature development, I introduced several new practices and technologies that were not part of the institution's stack at the time, including:
• Entity Framework for data access and ORM management
• An internal NuGet package store for dependency organization and reuse
• Unit testing to establish a foundation for reliable and maintainable code
We worked in short iteration cycles, continuously delivering builds, gathering feedback, and refining the system in collaboration with stakeholders. Once launched, I led a performance optimization phase, improving database queries, web server responsiveness, and refining the UI/UX for smoother navigation.
Impact
- Introduced ORMs, internal library management, and unit testing to the institution
- Ensured full stability during high-traffic enrollment periods
